It was a red letter day for Audemars Piguet in Le Brassus on 12 June this year as the firm laid, or rather cemented, the first stone of its new Les Forges manufactory. Founded 132 years ago, the company has grown steadily and today has 820 employees, 620 of whom work in Switzerland. Short of space in their premises on the route de France A– already enlarged on two previous occasions A– and wishing to regroup the five existing sites spread over the Joux Valley region, managers decided to construct a new building.

Watch Industry Manpower In 2006 Say 44,444!
On 30 September 2006, the Swiss watch and microtechnology industry employed 2,716 more people than one year previously. Total manpower in the industry increased from 41,728 to 44,444 workers (+6.5%). In absolute terms, this increase is attributable mainly to production personnel, whose numbers rose from 31,000 to 33,161 employees (+ 2,161; +6.9%). While managers (1,594 people, up by 11.2%) and administrative staff (9,272 people, up by 5.2%) also recorded strong increases, home workers were the only category to post a decline, falling again from 485 to 417 people (-68; -14%).

Strengthening Of Swiss Made Step One Accomplished
At its general meeting, the FH decided to propose the strengthening of the ordinance of the Federal Council concerning use of the name Swiss for watches, the famous Swiss made ordinance.
Held at the Hôtel Elite in Biel on 28 June, the 2007 general meeting of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry was marked above all by the willingness of delegates to revise the Swiss made ordinance and their conviction that this indication of origin is of great value in the eyes of consumers around the world.
The current regulations have been subject to criticism for several years, particularly within the industry, where they are deemed to be too lax.

During the first quarter of 2007 the Italian jeweller Bulgari recorded a turnover of 225.1 million euros, up by 10.4% compared to January-March 2006. At constant exchange rates, the increase would have been even higher at 16.4%. However the strength of the euro decided otherwise.
